18.5. Check of the current developed by the generator

This check allows to define whether current which is equivalent to rated power develops the generator.

Preparation for check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Before test check the following elements:
    1) A condition of the rechargeable battery installed in the car;
    2) Generator drive belt tension.

The rechargeable battery which is used for check of the current developed by the generator has to be partially discharged. At completely charged battery check cannot be executed because of insufficient loading of the generator.

  1. Switch off ignition.
  2. Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the rechargeable battery.
  3. Disconnect a wire from the generator B plug.

Connect wires and probes of the ampermeter very reliably as on a chain big current will proceed.

  1. Connect the ampermeter of a direct current with a limit of measurement 0–100 A consistently between the B plug and the wire disconnected from the generator. Make sure that the negative probe of the ampermeter was connected to the wire disconnected from the generator.
  2. Connect the voltmeter (0–20 V) between the B plug of the generator and "weight". Make sure that the positive probe of the voltmeter was connected to the generator B plug.
  3. Connect a tachometer and a wire to the negative plug of the rechargeable battery.
  4. Leave a cowl open.

Check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Check that the scale of the voltmeter is well visible to determination of size of tension. If the voltmeter shows voltage of 0 V, so the electric chain connecting the B plug of the generator and the negative plug of the rechargeable battery is not closed, the fusible insert or unreliable connection with "weight" fused.
  2. Start the engine and include headlights.
  3. Turn on driving beam of headlights and the fan of a heater in the mode of the maximum air supply. Quickly increase the frequency of rotation of a bent shaft of the engine up to 2 500 min. –1 and read values on devices, at the same time the ampermeter will show the current developed by the generator.

After start of the engine current of charging of the rechargeable battery very quickly decreases therefore this check needs to be expedited very much.

Result of check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Indications of the ampermeter have to exceed extreme value. If value of current is less than extreme value, and the wire connecting a generator exit, as it should be, remove the generator from the car and check it. Extreme value of current: 63,0 A for the generator 90 A.
  1. Extreme value of current is specified on the plate attached to the generator case.
  2. The current developed by the generator depends on temperature and loading. Therefore for obtaining extreme value of current partially discharge the rechargeable battery, previously having included headlights on the car with the idle engine.
Extreme value of the current developed by the generator cannot be received if temperature of the generator or air too high.
  1. After completion of test of extreme value of the current developed by the generator transfer the engine to the mode of idling and switch off ignition.
  2. Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the rechargeable battery.
  3. Remove a tachometer, the voltmeter and the ampermeter.
  4. Connect a wire to the generator B plug.
  5. Connect a wire to the negative plug of the rechargeable battery.
